 | Adina Segal artist statement My photographs transform the familiar into an alternate world. I am interested in discovering the drama and mystery in objects and spaces as mundane as a branch, bedroom, or half-eaten cake. The images I seek are more experiential than descriptive. Places and objects are partially revealed leaving room for our imagination to wander, for memories to come to the surface. The lack of clarity creates ephemeral moments of mystery and trance. I am fascinated by the subtle mind shifts that happen as we move through the world, subconscious moments in places we are familiar with, but do not often linger. My work accentuates how photography can capture time in a way that cannot be seen with the naked eye. I often use long exposures, capturing minutes, sometimes hours of motion and light, onto one piece of film. This compression of time allows me to uncover, expand, and sustain what we cannot always see in the flow of our daily lives. | | |
